Two tips:

1. Cheap is expensive: A cheap second-hand bike can be tempting. However, keep in mind that it might cost more in maintenance.
2. Buy a good lock (or even two): Of course, you don't want your bike to be stolen. Always lock your bike securely and attach it with a chain lock to a bike rack.
