Industry in Venlo dates back a long way. In the 18th century, a thriving ceramics industry emerged in Tegelen, which later also flourished in Belfeld. On the other side of the Maas, in Blerick, the first known industrial enterprise was established in 1843: an iron foundry.
Industrial traces with an English touch
In the center of Venlo, the English engineer and inventor Frederic Robert Pope left his industrial mark when he settled there in 1889. With the help of the Venlo merchant family Goossens, he established the first light bulb factory in the Netherlands near the city center; Goossens, Pope & Co. Philips later bought up all the shares, after which only wire and cable products were made in Venlo. The company had a significant influence on the city and had its own housing, a staff shop, its own fire department, and even an orchestra! In 1995, Belden Wire & Cable became the new owner.
From butter color factory to Canon Production Printing
Another company that still has a significant influence on the city is Canon Production Printing. Previously known as Océ and originally started as Boterkleurselfabriek L. van der Grinten. In the 1870s, pharmacist and inventor Lodewijk van der Grinten (1831) developed a substance to give margarine the color of butter. This marked the beginning of the development of various techniques for reproducing and printing texts and images. The company evolved into Océ and became Canon Production Printing in 2020. In 2021, the company had over 3000 employees.
