Marco Schell

When thinking of Venlo dialect music, one quickly ends up with the Drekskaters. The band was formed in 1982 as The Trash Cats, until it was decided to take a different approach in 1984.

Venlo celebrates Carnival

The rock 'n' roll sound remained and English was replaced by the Venlo dialect. The Drekskaters were born. They were soon booked for all sorts of performances and were on stage day in and day out, even during carnival. However, singer Marco Schell was not a fan of the carnival in the past. This love only developed later in life, along with his passion for music. As a child, Marco, who was born at the Kwartelenmarkt, went skiing more often, which meant he didn't catch the atmosphere. From the age of twelve, he spent more time in Venlo during carnival and came into contact with the Venlo traditions. Since then, he cannot imagine a year without the Venlo carnival or the Drekskaters.

"Carnival you are yourself!"

Marco Schell on carnival

The friendly Marco has sung in many places, but carnival is nowhere like in Venlo. Vastelaovend here is about traditions, togetherness, friendship, connection, and good music. He gladly performs during the vastelaovend, every year at In den Dorstigen Haen and Klup77 - formerly the Splinter. He feels the warmth of carnival through the magic of the beautiful profound music, the activities of Vastelaovesgezelschap De Kwas in Venlo-South, and the connection with the people of Venlo. Venlo is his home. His most valuable memory must be the vastelaovend of 1996, because that’s when he met his wife in the Splinter during a concert by the Drekskaters. He has been happily celebrating carnival for years now with his wife, children, and a dear group of friends. The Blauwe Zaoterdaag, the performances by the Drekskaters, the stepping down of the Kwas trios, and the stepping down of the Jocus City Prince at the City Hall play a crucial role. And even though carnival is different this year, Marco doesn’t think vastelaovend will be forgotten. By keeping the feeling alive, vastelaovend continues to exist. Vastelaovend bisse zelluf!
