Steyl has long been a place where people come for peace and reflection. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Father Arnold Janssen founded a monastic order of missionaries in Steyl. Shortly thereafter, two female monastic orders followed, and a mission museum, a printing house, and a botanical garden were established. Over 150 years later, it is a vibrant, close-knit, and enterprising village with an active community life, special traditions, and always something to experience!

In the heart of the village you will find the Monastery Brewery Steyl. In the past, the monastery village was self-sufficient, with, among other things, a carpentry workshop, bookbinding shop, bakery, and a printing shop. Nowadays, father and daughter Gansner are breathing new life into the old brewing craft in their newly renovated brewery. From fresh, light beers to robust, dark flavors – there is something for everyone. And with a lunch and drink menu that is second to none, Paul and Saar ensure a wonderful afternoon out!

With the Erfgoud route, you follow in the footsteps of the clay diggers, walk their old paths, and discover the significance of clay for this place. The 8.7-kilometer route takes you past eleven remarkable locations and can be easily done on foot or by bike. Highly recommended for enthusiasts of history, heritage, and ceramics.

A special vastelaoves tradition
In Steyl doen ze het met vastelaovend net even anders. Bij Vv. de Kaetelaers roepen ze namelijk geen prins uit maar Vors Lucifer. Tijdens de optocht op vastelaovesdinsdaag rijdt Vors Lucifer op de Duuvelswagen door de straten van Steyl. Op deze praalwagen staat een metershoge, rokende ketel met daarnaast een grote draak staat. Wie er in die ketel gaat? Tijdens het kaetelgerich, een ludiek volksgericht dat tweemaal in de vijf jaar zitting houdt, worden zaken rechtgezet die in de ogen van de burgerij krom zijn.
