"The Schinkewatte...?"

Curious about the fountain in the middle of the square? That is our 'Schinkemenke', a warrior on a turtle who carries the Venlo coat of arms in his right hand. Over time, the statue became worn out, leading people to think there was a 'schink' (ham) on it. Every year, on the last Thursday of the summer vacation, the Schinkemerret takes place, a large market. Fun fact and tip, the original statue is located in the Limburgs Museum.
