What is housing allowance and am I entitled to it?

Housing allowance is a financial contribution from the Dutch government, allowing Dutch citizens to afford rental housing. This allowance is intended for people with lower incomes, so it does not apply to everyone.

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Are registered with the municipality where you are going to rent
  • Have a rental contract
  • Rent a property independently:
    - Own living room and bedroom
    - Own kitchen with countertop, water supply and drainage, and a connection for a cooking appliance
    - Own toilet with water flushing
  • Your gross taxable income may not exceed €22,400 per year
  • The rent price (basic rent including service costs) may not exceed:
    - Younger than 23 years: €225.08 - €417.34
    - Older than 23 years: €225.08 - €710.68
  • The service costs may not exceed €12. These consist of:
    - Energy costs for general areas (not own residence)
    - Cleaning costs for general areas
    - Caretaker costs
