A tasty tradition

A protected regional product

The Limburg pie is not just any cake—it's a culinary heritage! Since January 22, 2024, this delicacy can officially be called a protected regional product. But not every pie earns this honorable title. Only pies baked in Limburg (Netherlands or Belgium), fresh from the oven, and never frozen, may bear the name Limburg pie.

What makes a genuine Limburg pie so special? The crust, made from soft yet firm yeast dough, is never thicker than 1 centimeter and must be robust enough for you to eat the pie with ease by hand. The diameter varies between 10 and 30 centimeters, and the filling is pure and authentic: creamy rice or delicious fresh fruit like juicy cherries, sweet and sour gooseberries, or rich plums. And take note: whipped cream is a no-go—the pie must derive its flavor entirely from itself!

From the creamy rice pie to the fresh and sweet gooseberry pie, each variant tells a story of tradition and craftsmanship. One bite and you taste the flavor of Limburg!
