Noord-Limburg has been an agricultural area for centuries. In the last 200 years, Venlo's farmers and horticulturists have grown into experts in their field.
Their knowledge, expertise, and innovative cultivation methods have put Venlo on the global map when it comes to agrofood. With pride, we gather and share our knowledge, experiment with new technologies, and collaborate without borders. This makes Venlo the center of innovation in the field of agrofood.

Until the end of the 19th century, grain was primarily cultivated in North Limburg, but from the agricultural crisis in 1878, many farmers switched to horticulture. This led to an increase in trade and transport in and around Venlo. Venlo 'gerdeneers' (horticulturists) pioneered and developed new cultivation methods in the process. Thus, in 1928, the Venlokas was conceived: a new type of greenhouse for that time. The Venlokas became the most constructed type of greenhouse worldwide and is still one of Venlo's most successful export products.
Nowadays, we no longer speak only of agriculture and horticulture, but of agrofood: the entire chain of agriculture and food production, from seed to the consumer's plate. We maintain and improve our expertise in the field of agrofood by continuously learning and innovating. Together with educational institutions, entrepreneurs, and the government, and since 2017 at the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo.

Since 2017, you can find Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo in Venlo. At this campus, projects are being worked on within the expertise areas of healthy and sustainable nutrition, future farming, and the bio-circular economy. New methods of growing and cultivating are being tested and developed, and the impact of nutrition on health is being researched.
Through various research and projects, we as a region increase our knowledge and expertise in the field of nutrition and food production. From practice-oriented to scientific research and from short-term projects to strategic long-term plans. All with a focus on sustainability and circularity.

From the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo, Kokkerelli works on projects and activities that raise children's awareness of the importance of a healthy diet. Kokkerelli develops educational programs for primary schools and collaborates with children to develop a healthy food supply in the region.

AgroWizard develops hardware products and smart software applications. For example, a trunk diameter meter for fruit and avenue tree growers. The meter provides tree growers with real-time insight into their inventory. This allows them to adjust and optimize their crop management throughout the growing season.

Kipster is a poultry farm that produces sustainable and animal-friendly eggs. Kipster chickens roam in light barns with fresh air, daylight, and small trees, and are fed with feed from residual flows from the food industry. Kipster operates with a circular system in which chickens not only provide proteins but also contribute to the processing of organic waste. Kipster is internationally active and works with a franchise model to set up sustainable farms worldwide.
