Venlo from A to Z

The city office of the municipality of Venlo is designed and built according to the sustainability philosophy Cradle to Cradle (C2C). The building generates its own energy, and on the roof of the building, there is a greenhouse that purifies the air. The building has the largest green facade in Europe: a real eye-catcher that filters fine dust through plants. Feel free to visit during office hours.

This Gothic basilica (1410-1610) houses valuable treasures, including a magnificent carved pulpit from 1701. The original tower was destroyed in World War II but was rebuilt with no less than 350,000 bricks and 3,565 blocks of marl. Since 1959, the sounds of the basilica's carillon have echoed through the inner city of Venlo every quarter hour.

On Keizerstraat and Bartelsplaats stands the Dominican Church, once the monastery chapel of the Dominican fathers and since 2007 a venue for weddings, parties, concerts, and other gatherings. During the day, the chapel is open to light a candle. In front of the entrance stands 't Paeterke, a bronze statue of a little priest by Ger Janssen.

From school to retirement home and from orphanage to nightclub: this monumental building from the 17th century has had various social functions over the years. It still is the Ald Weishoès, an important meeting place for the people of Venlo and visitors to the city. After a careful renovation, the monument has been a city inn, restaurant, and home base for Venlo associations since 2022. Feel at home with a snack and a drink in the inn or on the cozy courtyard.

The icon of the Venlo city center! The city hall, originally designed as a castle, dates back to the early 14th century and was rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. The façade is adorned with statues of famous Venlo residents such as the humanist Erycius Puteanus and painter Jan van Cleef. The ground floor was once a bustling market hall but is now a place for municipal receptions and meetings. It is the meeting place for the city council and the most popular wedding venue in Venlo.

The Keizerstraat, lovingly called 'de Floddergats' by the people of Venlo, is a charming little street where you should stroll through leisurely and at ease. The street owes its official name to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who arrived here on horseback in 1804. Here, you can get acquainted with the Venlo köpkes (heads) of, among others, Bäökmoel and Strónsmadam: typical Venlo characterizations of people, often not too flattering, beautifully crafted in bronze by artist Ger Janssen.
